On January 23, 2008, we hosted a workshop that offered advice on statewide resources for finding grants to fund community projects.
United States Department of Agriculture
- Randy Gore of USDA Rural Development presented statewide resources that are available for rural development, including housing and community facilities programs, business and cooperative programs, and utilities programs.
NC Department of Commerce: Commerce Finance Center
- George Sherrill of the Commerce Finance Center presented the programs the CFC offers, discussed who is eligible for benefits, and covered availability in several of our regions. See the CFC brochure here
- Gloria Nance-Sims, director of the Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Assistance presented an overview of the Community Development Block Grant program, Community Planning Program, and Urban Development.
City of Albemarle Redevelopment: The Lillian Mill
- Bob Sasser, Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Albemarle, presented the city’s redevelopment project at the Lillian Mill. This presentation describes the many state resources that supported the project’s success.
NC Rural Center
- Patti Glazer of Glazer Architecture presented a look at the redevelopment process of downtown Asheville She highlighted the types of available building codes for redevelopment and the problem solving techniques her company used to convert old buildings for new purposes. - Bob McNeil of the NC Rural Center covered Building Reuse and Restoration, Small Town Economic Prosperity Grants, Economic Stimulus Grants, Water and Sewer Grants, Community Innovation Grants and Financing options.

- Erskine Smith, Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Mooresville, explains how the town accessed various federal and state programs to revitalize their beautiful community.
